Skywatch Friday - Limestone Coast (Part 4)

On the way back from the Limestone Coast I noticed a flock of Pelicans circling above a lake in the Coorong National Park. When I stopped and looked properly, there were waves of Pelicans circling, gaining height, and then peeling off, all heading north. I estimate that there were at least 600, in groups of 75-100. I don't know where they were going, but they all seemed to know! It was a wonderful sight.

  4. What a display! I'd normally agree with EG, and I love the two closeup shots, but there's something about the second one that caught my attention and wouldn't let go.

  9. Wow, great shots! I've never seen so many pelicans in one photo or in real life before. It makes sense that they, too, fly in a V formation for drafting efficiency, but I've never seen that before. Very cool photos.

  13. Wow! Thanks everyone for your comments. Yes, it was one of those special moments that I shall remember for a long time. They were heading north, possibly to Lake Alexandrina, which is filling with floodwater from Queensland. There have been reports of gatherings of 2000+ Pelicans there. Thanks again, and have a wonderful weekend.

  16. Lovely series of posts on the Limestone Coast particularly the rock formations. I recall seeing over 3000 Pelicans in Bulgaria, an awesome sight and lots of opportunities for synchronised flying shots. FAB.

  17. Thanks again for your kind words. Joyful, the birds in the header are Double-barred Finches, also known by some as Owl Finch. They are common in Northern Australia.
