This is not Australia!

I was busy this weekend and only managed a short walk with a few photos - not enough for a post. Having spent this evening speaking with various relatives back in England, hearing about all the snow, I thought I'd post these photos from December 2001 when I was working in Budapest in Hungary. I was lucky enough to visit Hungary numerous times and made some very good friends there. Once you leave the city, it is like traveling back in time........... This is a small holding in the Hortobagy National Park. No power, no running water. At least this farm near Abony has power, but it still relies on a well for water. The Gereche Hills around Budapest are very picturesque in all seasons, but especially so in winter. This day was -25C (-13F) and I could only manage about 30 seconds before my hands froze and I had to return to the car. Apart from a few crows, this Tree Sparrow, puffed up against the cold, was the only bird I saw.

  1. Ahhh...memories of winter in the northern hemisphere. Can't imagine that you miss the cold weather but the location, well I bet that's another story.

  2. Hi Tony, perversely I think you are kind of missing the cold weather arn't you? (-: Lovely shots, specially the berries and the Tree Sparrow. Are you still in the middle of a heatwave over there? Hard to imagine!

  4. Lovely post all round, Tony, even though not Oz. I guess one accommodates to what one grows up with - or moves. The beauty is quite astounding. I love the starkness of the well in front of the house. And the red pop of the berries ... and that poor sparrow who is on the verge of a self-pop!

  8. These scenes are beautiful, Tony. Nicer to look at than to experience from the point of view of the cold, of course... As you said at the beginning of the post, here in the UK we have just finished with our snow and the ice and cold and I'm looking forward to getting warmer now! But still lovely to look at the pretty snow scenes and the yesteryear feel of life in Hungary.
    Janice.
