Bute Silo Art and Kadina Water Tower

 Today I took a trip up to Bute at the top of the Yorke Peninsula to look at their Silo Art.  It was finished in August last year and and was chosen to depict the local fauna and industry.   Bute is a mainly agricultural area   The main painting is of a rooster and a local girl.

The detail that artists manage to include is really amazing 

I also called in to Kadina, which has a small water tower in the town centre that has been painted.  The subjects are a girl holding some copper and wheat and a train. 

Eudunda silo Art

 The other day we took a trip around 100Km (60 Miles) Northeast of Adelaide to the country town of Eudunda.  In October, artist Sam Brooks finished painting the Silos here. Inspired by Colin Thiele's book The Sun on the Stubble, it shows two local children.

Owen Silo Art

Today we took a short trip up to Owen, on the Adelaide Plains, to see their recently completed silo art. The theme is "Wheat bags to sand bags" and is honouring the men who left this area to fight in the First World War.   It also honours the people left behind, who switched from making bags for the farmer's cereal crops to making sand bags for the trenches.

Road Trip - Silo art

We took a mini road trip today to look at some of the silo art north of Adelaide

First stop was Farrell Flat, east of Clare in the Mid-north. Completed in November 2020 it depicts the last train to pass through Farrell Flat before the railway line was closed

Our other stop was at Wirrabarra in the Southern Flinders Ranges. Completed in October 2018, this mural depicts the township's involvement with the forestry industry as well as some of the local birdlife, the striking Red-capped Robin.

Waikerie Silo Art

 It's been a while since my last post.   We haven't been out so much with this pandemic.  On Sunday we took a mini road trip to to Waikerie in the Riverland around 200 Km (120 Miles) North East of Adelaide

A few Km off the main road was this small, very plain Lutheran Church at Stonefield

On the way back to the main road we saw two Shinglebacks.  After I took my photo's I ushered them off the road into the safety of the grass verge

We went to Waikerie to view the silo art there.  It depicts some of the wildlife that abounds in the River Murray and surrounds, Including Regent Parrott, Pelicans and a Yabby

 

Mount Gambier

Last weekend we headed down to Mount Gambier for the weekend.  On the way we stopped at Coonalpyn to see the grain silos which had been painted by a local artist."Silo Art" is growing in Australia and is seen as another way to attract visitors to small country towns.  This one depicts children that used to live in Coonalpyn

A little further on we stopped to see some tree carvings near Penola.  The carvings depict Mary MacKillop and her contemporaries.

Mount Gambier is famous for it's Blue Lake, a lake in an extinct volcanic crater

We also took a trip across the border to Portland in Victoria.  Portland was packed as there was a big fishing competition there.  We headed out to a couple of nearby beaches and found a couple of critically endangered Hooded Plovers.  This one has been flagged CV

Back in SA we headed to Carpenter Rocks where some of the crayfish fishing fleet were moored up.

Finally, on the way home, we called in to Millicent, where this statue honours those who died and fought in the Black Friday bush-fires.
